Elisabeth (Lisa) Baker-Pham recently discussed the widespread issue of workplace bullying with June P. Johnson for the D.C. Bar Blog. A 2021 survey found that 30% of American employees have experienced abusive conduct at work, spanning multiple industries, including the legal field. “Typically, bullying describes conduct that may or may not rise to the level of unlawful harassment and may not be because of a protected class,” explains Lisa. “That is why employer policies prohibiting bullying are so important to ensuring a healthy and safe work environment.”
Companies and law firms can combat workplace bullying with several strategies, including establishing anti-bullying policies and creating a reporting mechanism for complaints. According to Lisa, it’s critical that firms act immediately when bullying occurs, because “when it comes to workplace culture, actions speak louder than words.”
